ATS 59G back from Major Overhaul

After almost a full year, our ATS 59G artillery tractor has returned from major overhaul in Slovakia and is now again in mint condition. When it originally arrived in 2011, first attempts at starting the engine showed that the engine pre-heating system exhaust was full of coolant, indicating a leak of the cooling system. As the pre-heating system is located on the right-hand side of the hull beneath the water/oil cooler, engine exhaust and engine oil tank, we totally stripped the right side of the engine and thought that we had identified the problem – a failed weld in the exhaust/coolant heat transfer chamber. After re-welding this part, the vehicle spent several years waiting to be re-assembled (and had become well known to the visitors of our annual fall gatherings because it provided an unobstructed view on the 12-cylinder V2 engine). By July 2017 we had agreed with our sister organization in Slovakia to call upon their help to re-assemble the vehicle, and it was transported across the border.

October 26 2017: The Traditionsverband at the Austrian Army’s Large Display in St.Veit/Glan

Morning fog still enshrouds the vehicles, but soon perfect sunshine should accompany the meeting

By invitation of the Carinthian Army Command, the Traditionsverband provided the “historical” part at the Army’s large display of Military Technology in St.Veit/Glan. On Austria’s National Day, every year the Army organizes its major display downtown Vienna, but also provides one such alternative display in one of the provinces. This year Carinthia was selected to show Army capabilities together with those of all other emergency and disaster relief organizations. Clear blue skies and perfect late-summer temperatures brought 30000 visitors to the fairgrounds in St.Veit/Glan.

On October 19 2017, the Amt für Rüstung Wehrtechnik (ARWT) held its 2017 Annual Meeting at the Burstyn Barracks in Zwölfaxing east of Vienna. As this year’s motto was “Military Vehicle Technology Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”, the Traditionsverband was asked to provide the vehicles surrounding the event, displaying Austrian military vehicles from the 1950s to the 1980s. Willys Jeep, Puch Haflinger, Gräf & Stift recovery crane, Steyr 680 M3F and Berliet GBC 8MT were parked next to M26 Pacific and Diamond recovery crane from the collection of the Military History Museum. Keynote addresses were presented by ARWT, RMVV (MAN Rheinmetall Military Vehicles Vienna) and the “Kuratorium für Verkehrssicherheit” (Traffic Safety Board).
